IQR code

iQR code is an alternative to existing square QR codes developed by Denso Wave. iQR codes can be created in square or rectangular formations.

iQR codes are an advanced form of the traditional QR codes, developed by Denso Wave. They are designed to provide greater flexibility and efficiency in encoding information, offering both square and rectangular formats.

This innovation addresses specific needs such as better fitting into constrained or unique spaces, making them particularly useful for labeling cylindrical objects or other non-standard surfaces.

iQR codes can fit the same amount of information in 30% less space. There are 61 versions of square iQR codes, and 15 versions of rectangular codes. For squares, the minimum size is 9 × 9 modules; rectangles have a minimum of 19 × 5 modules. iQR codes add error correction level S, which allows for 50% error correction.

Structure and Variants

Square iQR Codes: These codes come in 61 versions. The smallest version has a dimension of 9 × 9 modules.

Rectangular iQR Codes: There are 15 versions available, with the smallest version measuring 19 × 5 modules.

This variety in shapes and sizes allows iQR codes to be highly adaptable to different use cases, optimizing space usage by fitting more information into smaller or more irregularly shaped areas.

Space Efficiency

iQR codes are designed to be more space-efficient compared to traditional QR codes. They can store the same amount of information in 30% less space. This improvement is particularly significant in industries where space on product labeling is limited and maximizing the use of available area is crucial.

Error Correction

A notable feature of iQR codes is the introduction of an additional error correction level, labeled as level S. This level allows for up to 50% error correction, which is higher than the maximum error correction capability of traditional QR codes (which is 30%). This higher error correction level enhances the robustness of iQR codes, making them more reliable in environments where codes are likely to get damaged or partially obscured.

Applications and Limitations

iQR codes are particularly suitable for applications requiring high-density information encoding in limited spaces. Their ability to be rendered in rectangular shapes makes them ideal for objects with specific geometric constraints, such as cylindrical surfaces.

However, as of 2015, iQR codes had not received an ISO/IEC specification. This lack of standardization means that only proprietary Denso Wave products can create or read iQR codes. This proprietary nature can limit their widespread adoption and compatibility with general QR code readers.
