GS1 Sunrise 2027 Plan

The 2D Barcode is set to come "Center Stage", in 2027, with the GS1 Sunrise 2027 Initiative.

The GS1 Sunrise 2027 initiative is a significant move by the global supply chain to adopt two-dimensional (2D) barcodes at point-of-sale (POS) or point-of-care (POC) by the year 2027.

This transition is driven by the need for greater product information transparency, traceability, and authentication.

The 2D barcodes can carry more data compared to the traditional one-dimensional (1D) barcodes, like the EAN/UPC, which have been used for price lookup for decades.

The 2D barcodes will enable a single, standardized way to meet both supply chain needs and evolving consumer requirements, such as improved inventory management, enhanced recall readiness, and better product authentication.

Additionally, consumers will be able to scan these barcodes with a smartphone to access detailed product information, like nutritional facts, allergens, and sourcing data.

Industry stakeholders, including brand owners and retailers, are preparing for this change by transitioning packaging to include 2D barcodes and upgrading their systems to handle the new format.

The goal is that after the 2027 sunrise date, all retailers will be able to scan 2D barcodes, including those encoded with GS1 Digital Link.

The U.P.C. barcodes will continue to be accepted and scanned after the 2027 sunrise date.

The GS1 Sunrise 2027 initiative will include the use of QR Codes as part of the transition to two-dimensional (2D) barcodes.

These 2D barcodes, like QR Codes, are capable of holding more data and providing greater information transparency, traceability, and authentication compared to traditional one-dimensional (1D) barcodes such as the EAN/UPC.

The adoption of QR Codes will enable consumers to scan products with their smartphones to access a wealth of information, from nutritional facts to allergens and sourcing data, all powered by GS1 Digital Link.

This move is set to revolutionize the way we interact with product data in the retail environment.

What is GS1 Digital Link?

GS1 Digital Link is a standardized method of encoding identifiers such as GS1 GTINs, GLNs, and SSCCs.

These identifiers can be encoded in barcodes and scanned, or linked to online information.

Simply put, GS1 Digital Link allows barcode information to be embedded at the end of a URL, giving consumers, retailers and anyone in the supply chain access to a range of instantly updateable, brand-controlled product information.

The standard can be applied to any type of QR code and can provide new promotions or usage ideas through constantly updated digital content by brands without changing product packaging.

For example, a GS1 Digital Link URI might look like this:

https://free-barcode.com/01/00012345000058/10/2701

Its corresponding 2D barcode is:

When a customer scans this 2D barcode on an item with his mobile phone.

He will be directed to the manufacturer's website:   https://free-barcode.com

And display the corresponding product details. This product information corresponds to:

GTIN code:   00012345000058

Batch number:   2701
