Barcode Technology - Code11 Barcode               Hide the description

Code 11, also known as USD-8, is a barcode symbology developed by Intermec in 1977. It is used primarily in

telecommunications. The symbol can encode any length string consisting of the digits 0¨C9 and the dash character (-). A twelfth code represents the start/stop character, commonly printed as "*". One or two modulo-11 check digit(s) can be included.

Valid characters: 0123456789

Code 11 is one of the many barcode formats currently in use.

A Barcode is a method of representing data in a visual, machine-readable form.

The barcode formats has two categories:

One-dimensional (1D) --- Barcodes represented data by varying the widths and spacings of parallel lines.

Two-dimensional (2D) --- Using rectangles, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns to represented data.

Code11 is 1D barcode.

Code11 is variable with no fixed length.

Check digit:

Code 11 is not very secure because imperfect printing may convert one character in the image into another. In this case, a Code 11 symbol may require one or even two check characters (optional). One checksum digit is highly recommended for enhancing data security..

Human Readable:

Most barcodes display their corresponding values below them, which makes it possible to human read and manually  enter the barcode values into the equivalent system when the barcode label is worn out and cannot be read by the barcode scanner.

The Advantages of using barcodes:

If you want to reduce costs and save time, using barcodes is a good choice. Whether you are a company or a non-commercial organization, to improve efficiency and reduce overhead, barcodes are a valuable and viable option, which is economical and reliable.

The bar code design and printing cost are low. Generally speaking, no matter how they are used or where they are posted, the cost is not high. They can be customized economically, in a variety of finishes and materials.

The barcode system is very versatile, it can be used for any necessary data collection. This may include pricing or inventory information or management information service system. In addition, because barcodes can be affixed to almost any surface, they can be used not only to track the product itself, but also to track the production process, shipments and equipments.

Using barcode system will improve the inventory control is improved, it can track inventory accurately, inventory levels can be reduced it will lower the rate of eavesdropping. The location of the inventory and device can also be tracked, thereby reducing the time it takes to find the inventory and device.

The barcode system provide better data. Because a barcode can store various information such as inventory and pricing, especially when using QR Code, it can store thousands of characters, so the data stored in the barcode can be quickly obtained by the barcode reader, this fast turnaround ensures that time is not wasted on data entry or retrieval. In addition, the barcode can be customized to include other relevant information as needed. They provide fast and reliable data for various applications.

Barcodes are cheap and user-friendly, providing an indispensable tool for tracking data from pricing to inventory. The end result of a comprehensive bar code system is reduced overhead.

FAQ About Code 11 Barcode

What is the historical origin of the Code11 barcode?

The Code 11 barcode is a barcode symbol mainly used in the telecommunications field. It was developed by Intermec in 1977 to meet the special application requirements of high information density matrices.

Its name comes from the fact that it can encode 11 characters, including the digits 0 to 9 and a dash (-), as well as a start/stop character, usually printed as "*". Its structure is similar to the matrix of 2/5.

In what industries is Code11 barcode used?

Code 11 barcodes are mainly used in the telecommunications field, such as identifying telephone lines, switches, etc. It can also be used to mark inventory, serial numbers, etc.

An example of a Code 11 barcode application is the labeling of telecommunications equipment, where it can be used to represent the device's serial number or other information. For example, a Code 11 barcode could represent a string like this: 123-456789. This barcode consists of 12 characters, including the start and end symbols (*), and each character consists of 5 lines, 3 black lines and 2 white lines.

The reason why Code 11 barcodes are used in the telecommunications field is because it can efficiently encode large amounts of digital information and has high reliability and error tolerance because it has two check digits, which improves reliability and error tolerance.

Structural characteristics of Code11 barcode?

Each character is composed of 3 black lines (bar) and 2 white lines (space), which is a 5-line encoding method. There are 2 thick lines and 3 narrow lines, or 1 extra large thick line and 4 narrow lines.

This symbol can encode an arbitrary length string consisting of the digits 0¨C9 and the dash character (-). The twelfth code represents the start/end character, usually printed as "*". Can contain one or two modulo 11 check digits.

It is a discrete binary symbol system in which each number consists of three bars and two spaces; a single narrow space separates consecutive symbols.

The width of numbers is not fixed; three-digit numbers (0, 9, and -) are 1 element wide, while other numbers are 2 elements wide.

Valid code has a wide bar and may have an additional wide element (bar or space).

It uses parity bits and weighted check bits to improve reliability.

It is suitable for special application requirements of high information density matrices.

What is the difference between Code 11 barcode and Code 128?

Code 11 barcodes can only encode digits 0-9 and dashes (-), while Code 128 can encode a total of 128 characters from ASCII 0 to ASCII 127, including numbers, letters, and symbols.

Code 11 barcodes consist of 5 lines per character, while Code 128 barcodes consist of 6 lines per character.

Code 11 barcodes are mainly used in the telecommunications field, while Code 128 can be used in a variety of fields, such as logistics, medical, retail, etc.

Code 128 has three subsets, namely A code, B code, and C code, which can be switched according to different data types. There are no subsets of Code 11 barcodes.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Code11 barcodes?

Advantage:

Can encode numbers of any length and the "-" character.

Suitable for special application requirements of high information density matrices in the telecommunications field.

There are two check digits, which improves reliability and fault tolerance.

Shortcoming:

It can only encode 11 characters and cannot represent letters or other symbols.

Each character consists of 5 lines, taking up more space than other linear barcodes such as Code128.

Special scanners or software are required to identify and decode them.
